SHORT BIO: Adnan Z Morshed, Ph.D., is a scholar, architect, architectural historian, urbanist, and columnist. His research focuses on architectural history and theory, 20th-century urbanization, urban poverty, and history of water. Currently, he is a professor at the School of Architecture and Planning, Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. He received his Ph.D. and Master’s in architecture from MIT. Adnan Morshed was a 2018 TEDxFoggyBottom speaker at George Washington University. He is the author of multiple books; among them, Impossible Heights: Skyscrapers, Flight, and the Master Builder (University Minnesota Press, 2015). He has served on the Board of Directors of the Society of Architectural Historians, Board of MIT’s US$4.5 million Global Architecture History Teaching Collaborative (GAHTC), and the editorial board of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, jury for the National Endowment for the Humanities grants, CEPT Essay Prize (2018-2020), and chaired the Society of Architectural Historians’ committee for 2015 Alice Davis Hitchcock Book Award. He has been awarded highly competitive fellowships, among others, the Wyeth Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA), the National Gallery of Art; the Smithsonian Institution; Wolfsonian-Florida International University; and the Society of Architectural Historians. His research has garnered prestigious research grants from, among others, the Graham Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, and MIT. His articles appeared in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Journal of Architectural Education, Journal of South Asian Studies, Thresholds (MIT), Center (National Gallery of Art), Constructs (Yale), New Geographies (Harvard), Architectural Design, and Traditional Dwellings and Settlements Review. He has served as a reviewer for various national and international refereed journals, and architectural competitions, and has been cited widely in various professional and news networks, including The New York Times and Asia News Network. He is a columnist for The Daily Star, most circulated English-language daily in Bangladesh. Adnan Morshed is a practicing architect. His recent design work includes eight BRAC regional offices across Bangladesh (completed); a farmhouse in Greensboro, NC (in progress); interior design for Central Cafeteria, Library, and Canteen at the Residential Semester Campus of BRAC University at Savar, Dhaka (completed). Sujaul Islam Khan is a practicing architect and Assistant Professor of the Dept. Of Architecture, North South University. He obtained his B. Arch degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1999. He attended Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts Washington University in St. Louis, USA where he received Master of Architecture (M. Arch) with honors in August 2008. He also has worked in the USA. He was the Member Secretary Environment and Urbanization, 20th Executive Council, Institute Architects Bangladesh 2013-14 and is currently holding the same post in the 25th Executive Council. His research interests are spatial planning and Transit Oriented Development in Bangladesh and sustainable Habitat. He also contributes to the Daily Star on issues related to the environment and habitat. AKM Riaz Uddin is an urban and regional planner with a keen interest in research. He studied urban and regional planning at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Leveraging his combined planning, economics, and transportation knowledge, he has served as a consultant and researcher on numerous projects for key Bangladeshi organizations. These include the Planning Commission, the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), and the Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP). His significant contributions include developing a framework for project appraisal in the transportation sector, identifying rural growth centers across Bangladesh, and formulating a national spatial planning framework. Beyond these specific projects, his experience extends across various institutions. He has worked, among other organizations with The Hunger Project, the Center for Policy Dialogue, Unnayan Shamannay, Bangladesh Institute of Social Research (BISR), University Press Limited, and Plan Plus. Today's Guest: Tanzil Shafique teaches at the University of Sheffield and is an Associate of the Urban Institute. He is the Convenor of the the Southern Theorising Group (STingG), as well as co-leads Sheffield Design Lab. Tanzil’s research looks at informal cities and their adaptation to climate change, participatory spatial practices and decolonial/pluriversal thought. He recently won half a million pounds from UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for a wetland revitalisation project in Dhaka. He also runs justURBAN, a grassroot activism and design outreach infrastructure.
